The Network

THE NUMBERED

Upon receiving their first echo, characters become unable to forget a piece of information that is not an echo. As soon as a character is old enough and/or sentient enough to understand the concept of numbers, the information will take shape as a number made up of of twenty digits (characters who have no concept of numbers can access the network, but they will need to find a different way to conceptualize the information). Each number is unique to the person who receives it.

As every reincarnated character, and only reincarnated characters, receive such a number, they can be referred to as "the Numbered".

ACCESSING THE NETWORK

Tapping into the network is simple for a Numbered and impossible for someone who is not Numbered.

For those who are not reincarnates, network content simply doesn't exist. If a non-Numbered watches a Numbered tap into the network, they'll see/hear them do the next closest mundane activity: Browse facebook, write into their journal, stare at and talk to their mirror. The only thing that a non-Numbered will be able to perceive is the number that was used for access.

That also means that it is impossible to link to it on social media platforms, to copy it into a word document, to screentshot it or to otherwise record it directly. If someone wishes to preserve network content off the network, they will have to reproduce it, for example by writing it down in a notebook. It is, however, entirely possible to link to non-network content in network posts, assuming the input method is suited to linking.

To tap into the network, a Numbered only needs to give form to their number. This can happen in many ways, shapes or forms: Typing it into a computer, writing it with pen into a notebook, with blood on a wall, in lipstick onto a mirror, tapping it in Morse code onto a pond's surface, dictating it into their phone, counting pebbles onto the ground... They can write in Arabic, Japanese, or any other system of numbers that is coherent to them. A synaesthetic person could smear various scents onto a board. The only important thing is that the number needs to be given form with or on the medium that is the intended means of communication in a way that holds meaning to the person tapping into the network.

Video, audio, text and drawings can be transmitted through the network. It comes with a screenreader function for characters who cannot read.

The network is always accessed with one's own number. Inserting someone else's number will open up a private feed with the person whose number it is. Please note that people will not know someone else's number unless they have seen it before or been given it.

PRIVACY SETTINGS AND IDENTIFICATION

A message on the network can either be completely public or locked to one person (in which case it is recommended to use IC contact posts in the characters' journals). It is not possible to have a private feed with more than one person. Either a character messages one individual, or they message everyone. There is no in-between.

Identification on the network depends on the medium used to tap into it. If the number has been written down to access it, other network users will see the number. If it has been dictated into a phone, others will only have the voice to identify the person. If someone has drummed their number against a TV screen in Morse code, they will have a video feed but no number as identification. And so on. Generally, if a character wants their number to be visible, it is easy to have it be visible, and if they'd rather remain as anonymous as possible, it isn't hard to do that either.

MODIFYING THE NETWORK AND ITS CONTENTS

The network itself cannot be hacked or otherwise modified. Its functions cannot be altered, its source cannot be found, and private messages cannot be perceived by anyone but the two participants. Notice will be given should this ever change.

There is no "search" function, but anything on the network is accessible indefinitely, no matter if the content creator is still on there/alive, and anyone can scroll back all the way, no matter when they joined. Content on the network can be deleted by the person who put it on there, but not by anybody else.

OOCly: HOW TO USE TO THE NETWORK

When making a post, be it a log or a network post, please follow the instructions provided on the IC community:
  • put the type of post [video/audio/text] somewhere in the subject line
  • add tags for your character, the "#network" tag, and if applicable the "!open" (= public) tag
  • use the provided form in the body of the post

When responding to an existing post, please add your character tag to it (format "CANON: Character's Canon Name").

Not immediately relevant to anything, but I got to thinking about the Network's functions and have two questions:

1., Say a few Numbered are hanging out together, and one of them taps into the network - for a non-private message. Would the others standing around also perceive the Network, or would they need to tap into it themselves?

2., To compare to DW's view functions, is content on the Network formatted like threads, where messages directly responding to each other are grouped together - or like flat view, a chronological order mishmash of responses?

1. Oooh. That's useful to know - and a way people could sneakily try to test for whether others are Numbered.

Would the similarity to speaker phone extend to them contributing to the Network - like, would the surrounding people also be able to talk or draw or whatever, and have it connected to the number/identity of the person who tapped in?

2. Sounds good!
